Welcome!

Welcome to the official weblog (blog) of the Berea College Student Government Association (SGA)! Check in frequently for updates on your student government. Remember, every student who pays a student activity fee--this means YOU, because every student pays this fee-is a "member" of the SGA. It's not just the officers you elect.

So get plugged in! Become engaged! Participate! And Stay Involved!

This blog is a new feature of the SGA Public Relations Department. We chose a blog rather than a website because it's interactive! Read our posts and then click "Post Comment" at the end of the article and tell us what you think. Sound off. Be heard, because we want to hear from you!

The blog is a great idea--good job.
Two things:
I do not appreciate how the Jena 6 incident was framed in the report ("120 years for a school yard fight"). Stick to the facts (if you can even find any on this incident); misrepresenting this issue will only further ignorance and deter others to join the cause. The issue is much more complicated; please make that evident.
Also, get rid of the title "Opening Blind Eyes;" it doesn't make sense. Whether blind eyes are open are not is immaterial--the person is still blind!
Thank you!

I think that having this blog is certainly a step in the right direction! Good idea!

I agree that the blog seems like a great idea. I hope that it is successful in providing another channel for dialogue on our campus.
First I would like to respond to Kirsten's comment about the Jena 6. I apologize if the information appears inaccurate, but this is simply an estimated time that the six could face. The six charged were: Robert Bailey, Theo Shaw, Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis; 16 year old Mychal Bell, and one student whose name has not been released. To this date only Mychal Bell has faced trial; first as an adult, but this was overturned and the judge sent him to the juevenile court (as he is a minor). He originally faced approximately 22 years in prison for the charges against him. The "120 years" mentioned in the article is only the average of this estimate applied to each of the six. So this number was purely an estimate, and as all sentences are before the trial.
Secondly, The Opening Blind Eyes Project is the title of the project started by a Berea student. I would like to hear her intended purpose of the title, but I am fairly sure she does not expect to give sight to those who are physically blind; I think it is metaphorical in regards to bringing about awareness.
I hope these comments provide a little bit of clarity, and are taken in good spirits as they are intended. Please continue to use the blog to bring up any misconceptions or confusions regarding SGA as well as ideas and resolutions for any other issues. Also, remember that every student makes up SGA, and it cannot progress without your participation. :)

The Opening Blind Eyes project is entitled this becuase it is a massive awarness campiagn about global injustice issues. Berea students are blind to these injustices due to our lovely bubble, this project is to enlighten them. We will be focusing on four major issues, bringing awarness to the events and foster collaberation between the SGA and other groups. If you have any more question I encourage you to come to the meeting 10-18-07 at 6 in the SGA office.
Thank you,
Carol Davey

Ok, I know there's this drought going on and all, and we're getting e-mailed about taking shorter showers and consolidating laundry and whatnot... then why did I see ER getting sprayed down on the outside on Tues.? Maybe it's something that needs to be done, yes, but is it so imperative that it can't wait for the drought to be over?

Terri,
1--the Jena 6 was inappropriately framed because of its conceptualization as a "school yard fight;" I was not contending the time estimate
2--of course it's a metaphor; but even as a metaphor it's still illogical.
